Sam Adams goes for the hard stuff: Partnering with Berkshire Mountain to make whiskey

Steve’s breakdown: We all knew this was going to happen someday. Well here it is: Sam Whiskey! Managing the expectations of this brand will probably be the big job.

BOSTON GREAT BARRINGTON, MA: You know what’s good? Samuel Adams beer. You know what’s better? Samuel Adams liquor. The local brewery today announced a partnership with Berkshire Mountain Distillers, in which they will create two brand new whiskeys with the Great Barrington based distillery.

The new joint whiskey will be called Cinder Block, according to the Boston Business Journal. Sam Adams will use their Sam Adams Boston Lager to create the barrel-aged whiskey, a process that takes about two years, and will be ready to be served in 2015. The first batch will yield 12,000 bottles, to be labeled as Berkshire Mountain, and sold for $40 a bottle.

Can we expect more collaboration like this from Sam Adams and Berkshire Mountain in the future? Maybe. In a Boston Globe report, both companies indict that this whiskey is an experiment, and it’s too soon to tell. Jim Koch, Boston Beer founder, tells the Globe:

“We don’t need this to appeal to masses. It’s going to be a little too crazy…But there are whiskey connoisseurs for whom this will be something innovative.”

So, we all have to sit tight and wait patiently for the next few years before we get a chance to try the Cinder Block whiskey. If it’s as good as the Sam Adams as we know it, though, it will definitely be worth the wait.
