National Geographic discovers new CMO

National Geographic spent almost $14 million in 2014; mostly in print. Who Knew?

WASHINGTON, DC: Emma Carrasco joins the National Geographic Society as its chief marketing and communications officer and svp of global strategy, a new role for the organization, and one that will place her on the senior leadership team.

Carrasco comes on board from NPR, where she was the chief marketing officer and svp for audience development. She will be reporting to a familiar face: National Geographic Society president and CEO Gary E. Knell, whom she had once worked for at NPR, when he was the president and CEO there.

“With her vast experience, Emma will be a crucial leader for the Society and our brand as we expand our work supporting science, exploration and education. In her new role, she will grow our ability to share with a global audience how National Geographic’s programs–our explorers, our grant making, and our educational outreach–are demonstrably changing the world,” said Knell in a statement.
