UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School enlists CMO

Steve’s breakdown: The new guy is an ex-Macy’s marketing exec so, not to be too literal, expect some retail advertising going on at Chapel Hill. Maybe you can help him out with that . . .

CHAPEL HILL, NC: The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill‘s Kenan-Flagler Business School has appointed Michael Schinelli as its chief marketing officer (CMO), the school announced today.

Before joining UNC Kenan-Flagler, Schinelli was the associate vice president for marketing and communications at Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey, where he was responsible for designing and overseeing integrated marketing initiatives across traditional and new media channels. He also led brand positioning and creative development for Stevens’ advertising efforts and managed the news and media relations department at the organization.

“I am delighted that Michael is joining UNC Kenan-Flagler as CMO,” noted James W. Dean Jr., dean of UNC Kenan-Flagler. “His background in both the private sector and academic institutions and his knowledge of both traditional and emerging approaches to marketing represent the qualities needed to lead the school’s marketing efforts.”

“Joining UNC Kenan-Flagler as CMO is truly an honor,” Schinelli said. “I am very excited to support the growth of this outstanding school and its numerous programs by strategically stewarding its global brand and stellar reputation to even greater heights.”

Prior to joining Stevens in 2009, Schinelli was the director of communications for Macy’s Inc. in New York City. There, he was responsible for establishing vision, strategies and partnerships to support communications processes for the Fortune 100 Company and its 850 locations. In his earlier role as director of creative operations at Macy’s, he oversaw in-store marketing design, graphics and creative development within context of the corporate integrated marketing process.

Schinelli received his undergraduate degrees in English literature and art from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a Master of Science in management from Stevens.
